Checklists 3.1, 4.1 (Year 10) Flashcards
What is the equation to calculate momentum?
Mass x Velocity
What is the unit for momentum?
Kg m/s
kilograms meter per second
What is the unit for velocity?
m/s (Meters per second)
What is the unit for mass?
Kg (Kilograms)
Can you draw the equation triangle for momentum?
p = m x v (Momentum = Mass x Velocity)
What is conservation of momentum?
Momentum in = Momentum out
How can we survive impacts better?
With seat-belts and airbags
What do car manufacturers add to cars to help protect their passengers?
Seat-belts and airbags
What affects the force when two vehicles collide?
Newtons third law (When two objects push or pull from each other, they exert equal and opposite forces)
How can we reduce an impact force?
A simple answer is: To make the force as small as possible we use seat belt and airbags
Explanation:
(A seat belt, which stretches when the car stops moving, so that the person wearing the belt doesn’t stop immediately.
Air bags have the same effect - they slow down the change in momentum, and so reduce the forces.)
What is the equation for acceleration?
Meters Per Second divided by Seconds
Change of velocity divided by the time taken
What is the equation for force?
m x a (Mass x Acceleration)
How can we combine the acceleration and the force equations to give us a change in momentum equation?
If you combine those two equations, it would be:
kg m/s = Newtons x Seconds
(Change in momentum = force x time)
If we can increase mass what must our velocity do?
Decrease
If we increase velocity what must our mass do?
Decrease
What is meant by power in Science?
Watt (W)
How is power measured?
Joules divided by Seconds
Energy Transformed divided by time
What is the relationship between power and energy transferred?
If you multiplied them it would give you the time:
Watts x Joules = Seconds
(Power x Energy transferred = Time)
Note: A Watt is just a flow of one Joule per second.
What are the units for power, work, Energy and Time?
Power: Watts
Work: Joules
Energy: Joules
Time: Seconds
What is a kilowatt?
Kilowatts is basically 1000 watts
What happens to the Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE) when an object moves up or down?
The higher the object is, the more Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE) and the lower it is, the less.
Why does an object moving up gain GPE?
Because we are going further away from the surface of the Earth.
How can we calculate the change in GPE when an object moves up or down?
Joules = m x g x h
Gravitational Potential Energy = Mass x Gravitational Field Strength x Height)
What does the kinetic energy of an object depend on?
Its mass and its speed
