CHC Theory - PPT Flashcards
Many specific narrow abilities combine to form this Statum
Stratum I
Key Broad Abilities are this Stratum
Stratum II
This stratum is your Overall Intelligence (g)
Stratum III
CHC Theory is this approach for dermining SLD
Pattern of Strength and Weaknesses
Fluid Reasoning Crystallized Intelligence Long-Term Retrieval Visual Processing Auditory Processing Cognitive Processing Speed Short-Term Working Memory
7 Key Broad Abilities
This is dependent upon learning, mainly non-verbal testing. Concept formation, drawing inferences, inductive reasoning
Fluid Reasoning
A person’s knowledge base or general intelligence. Is a verbal test - Vocabulary, Listening Comp, Word Knowledge. Not HOW we store, but what info is stored. Accumulated since birth developed through formal education.
Crystallized intelligence
A person’s ability to perceive, analyze, and synthesize a variety of auditory information. Sounds, Rhymes, Phonics, Phonemes, Memory for sounds
Auditory Processing
A person’s ability to generate, perceive, and analyze visual patterns and visual information. Puzzles, mazes, reading graphs
Visual Processing
Ability to hold information in one’s mind and use it within a few seconds - digit span
Short-term (Working Memory)
Ability to perform simple tasks, but have to maintain concentration and attention while timed - always a timed test
Processing Speed
Individual’s ability to take in and store information and then retrieve quickly at a later time by using association. Could be 20 minutes, or years later. tied to short-term
Long Term Retrieval
Academic difficulties in Fluid Reasoning for Child
Reading - Drawing Inferences, abstracting main idea
Math - Reasoning Quantitatively, Number Relationships
Writing - Essay writing and generalizing concets, Comparing/Contrasting ideas
Academic Problems in Crystallized Intelligence
Reading - Decoding and Comprehending
Math - Vocabulary of Math
Writing - Grammar, Word useage
Language - expressive language
Academic Problems in Auditory Processing
Reading - Phonics skills, sounding out words
Math - Reading word problems
Writing - Spelling, note taking, poor quality of writing
