Chassis Flashcards
A chassis has to withstand what types of loads ?
Static and dynamic
What are the negative effects of a rectangular frame?
Sagging- bending action causing frame to bend
Road shocks- shocks caused by vehicle motion or impacts
What is lozenging?
Rectangular frames is pushed into a parallelogram shape
What is twisting?
One corner of the frame is deflected
What does the flat frame offer?
Little resistance to bending and twisting
What does the channel frame offer?
Excellent resistance to bending
Resistance increases as depth of section increases
What does tubular frame offer?
Excellent resistance to torsion
Resistance increases as diameter is increased
What does a box frame offer?
Good resistance to both bending and torsion
What are the Advantages and disadvantages of the light truck frame?
Great strength
Very poor resistance to torsion
What does a box frame section need to be?
Extremely Rigid at mourning points for body and main components
What do you use in areas of high stress?
Gusset plates
What are the 5 types of frames ?
Light truck frame Box section frame Backbone frame Energy absorbing frame Frameless frame
What benefits do frameless frames offer (monocoque)
Gives a stiff, light construction , suitable for mass construction
What are body shells made by?
Spot welding the panels or building a space frame
What is a space frame?
Skelton of high structural strength on which is mounted the body panels
