Airbags Flashcards
What are the 2 types of passenger restraint systems?
Seat belt
Air bags supplementary restraint system
What is the purpose of an airbag?
Supplement the seatbelt
Distribute impact forces
Protect occupants from head and chest injuries
What speeds can airbags reduce injuries?
35 mph with stationary object
60 mph with another vehicle
What are the 4 major components of an airbag?
Inflator and airbag assembly- steering wheel
Impact sensors- around the vehicle
Airbag electronic control unit - centre of vehicle
Driver warning lamp - in dashboard
How are the igniter and steering wheel connected?
Via flattened cable, wound similar to a clock spring to allow full travel of the steering wheel
What type of current does airbag system use?
AC to stop accidental triggering
How fast does the drivers airbag Inflate?
30/40 milliseconds
How fast does the passenger airbag inflate?
80-100 milliseconds
How fast do airbags inflate/deflate?
Less than 150 milliseconds
What should you do when carry out electrical checks?
Take extreme care
What is the airbag made from?
Nylon fabric
What capacity can the driver and passenger airbags carry?
Driver -30 ltrs
Passenger -150ltrs
What is an impact sensor?
Known as acceleration sensor, detects rapid deceleration and sends signal to the ECU
What is a safing sensor?
Known as a safety switch, located in the ECU, prevents accidental triggering of the airbag
Connected in series with power supply
What is the airbag ECU?
Mounted centrally in vehicle
Houses all the electronics and triggering circuits
Houses back up supply, transformer and capacitor
Houses self diagnostic circuit
