STAGE 1: SENSORIMOTOR (BIRTH-TWO)
Children learn through the senses and physical actions in six substages.

anxious-ambivalent attachment
- toddlers show distress when unfamiliar people are nearby.

anxious-avoidant attachment
- no preference to caregiver vs stranger
- caregivers are ignored upon return
- general needs not met promptly, caregivers ignore delight.
- prefer to be alone as adults.
disorganized attachment
- inconsistent in attachment behaviors.
- make poor eye contact.
- caregivers show neglect and abuse.
- do not form lasting intimate relationships and are anxious and depressed.

- experiences anger by throwing self on the floor, kicking, and screaming
- cries, whines, and whimpers.
