Charts Flashcards
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 25, Area 4.) The airspace directly overlying Fort Worth Meacham is
Class D airspace to 3,200 feet MSL.
Which is true concerning the blue and magenta colors used to depict airports on Sectional Aeronautical Charts?
Airports with control towers underlying Class B, C, D, and E airspace are shown in blue.
This question is often misread by students. You are being asked about the color used to depict airports on Sectional Charts. Magenta colors are used for untowered airport while blue colors are used for towered airports. Refer to “Airport Depiction” video for more information.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 20, Area 2.) Why would the small flag at Lake Drummond be important to a remote PIC?
The flag indicates a VFR check point for manned aircraft, and a higher volume of air traffic should be expected there.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 59, Area 2.) What kind of airport is Deshler (6D7)?
A public airport with a runway that is not a hard surface.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 26, Area 2.) Identify the airspace over Bryn Airport.
Class G airspace – surface up to but not including 1,200 feet AGL; Class E airspace – 1,200 feet AGL up to but not including 18,000 feet MSL.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 23, Area 3.) You plan to inspect the lights at the top of the lighted tower located 7 miles SW of Savannah/Hilton Head International airport. What is the highest altitude you can fly without airspace approval?
Up to but not including 1,300 feet MSL.
The lighted obstacle is located in an area with multiple airspace staggered on top of each other. The airspace is class G from the surface up to but not including 700 feet AGL, then class E from 700 feet AGL (shaded magenta) up to but not including 1300 feet MSL, and then Class C from 1300 MSL feet to 4100 feet MSL. While you can fly higher than 400 feet near a structure, as long as you stay within 400 feet horizontally, this is only true as long as you do not enter Class B, C, or D or E2 (E2 is class E that starts at the surface and is primary to the airport). . The FAA says you only need airspace approval when flying in Class E that is primary the airport, which means Class E starting at 700 feet (or 1200 feet) does not require approval for entry. Based on the chart, the obstacle is 1534 feet tall (AGL) or 1538 feet MSL. This means that a portion of the obstacle is encroaching into Class C airspace. AS a result, you can only fly up to but not including 1300 feet MSL. Since Savanah is sitting at 50 feet elevation (based on the chart), this means we can’t fly any higher than 1250 feet AGL.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 23, Area 1.) What is the surface airspace at Allendale CO (AQX)?
Class G
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 23.) You are planning to inspect the double obstacle located west of Statesboro Bulloch Co Airport. Which airspace is it located in?
Class G airspace with Class E starting at 700 feet AGL.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 71.) Where does controlled airspace start over Riego Airport, located north of Sacramento International?
Surface.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 24, Area 2.) What kind of airport is Flying B?
A private airport.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 20, Area 3.) What is the surface airspace of the Pine Island airport?
Class G
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 23.) What is the height of the lighted obstacle approximately 6 nautical miles southwest of Savannah International?
1,548 feet MSL.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 20, Area 1.) What is the surface airspace of Langley AFB?
Class D
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 21, Area 2.) What is the surface airspace of Poleschook?
Class G
Poleschook is a private airport inside a wind turbine field. The wind turbines are shown here as a group obstacle rather than controlled airspace, though the line type is the same.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 71, Area 6.) Sky Way Airport is
a nonpublic-use airport.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 25, Area 6.) At what altitude does class B airspace begin over Mesquite (HQZ)?
4000’ MSL
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 24, Area 1.) At what altitude does Class E airspace start above Majors Airport?
Above 3000 feet MSL.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 21, Area 3.) At what altitude does controlled airspace begin over Mercer County Regional (HZE)?
700 feet AGL.
