Static
Someone who does not change over time
Round:
Someone who has a complex personality; conflicted and contradictory
Flat
Has just one kind of personality trait or characteristic
Stock:
Stereotypical: the jock, mad scientist, geeky boy, etc
Protagonist
The main character
Antagonist
The character or obstacle that the protagonist must overcome
Anti-hero
A major character who lacks conventional nobility of mind, and who struggles for values not deemed universally admirable. (Macbeth)
Foil
Any character whose personality qualities contrast with another character.
Symbolic
A character whose existence represents some major idea or aspect of society
TRAGIC HERO
A great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat
TRAGIC FLAW
The character defect that causes the downfall of the protagonist of a tragedy
Dynamic
A person who changes over time, usually as a result of resolving a central conflict
6 elements of a tragic hero:
Nobility, a reversal of fortune, recognition (must go through a change from ignorance to knowledge), tragic flaw,tragic irony, catharsis(sudden emotional climax)
