Q

Scout

A
  • Intelligent (never deliberately learned how to read).
  • Confident, strong willed fights with boys
  • Tomboy, 1930s would be expected to wear dresses, does not want her femininity as it is almost being forced on her, however as she matures and grows closer to Mrs Maudie and Calpurnia and ‘began to think there was much more skill to being a girl’ than she thought.
  • Matures in attitude towards Boo Radley (understands he is more afraid of the world), not nightmarish figure dining on raw squirrels.

Q

Boo Radley

A
  • Shown as nightmarish figure who only comes out at night and dines on raw squirrels and cats with blood-stained hands.
  • Gossip from adults, discrimination by society because he is different mentally. Intolerance of others that are different. USE CONTEXT.
  • Ghost, not seen but stories.
  • Represents mockingbird, innocent ‘does not do one thing but make music for us to enjoy…’ but he is still discriminate against (unjust and unfair).
  • Kind, saves children and gives them gifts, wants to be their friend. Saves them from Bob Ewell.

Calpurnia

A
  • Scout finds her strict/harsh/determined but she loves and respects her.
  • Used as a narrative device to open Scout’s mind to black community (takes her to church and talks in the African American Black dialogue)
  • Scout learns how to be strong from her and embrace her femininity (after watching her in the kitchen and decides there is much more skill to being a girl than she thought).
