Characteristics of Skill + Skill Continua Flashcards
Define skill
a learned ability to bring about pre-determined results with the minimum outlay of time, energy or both.
Difference between skill and ability:
Give an example of each.
Skills are learnt, whereas abilities are innate.
e.g. ability - power, skill - throwing a javelin
What are the characteristics of skill?
Aesthetically pleasing Accurate Adaptable Consistent Controlled Efficient Goal directed
What is the use of skill continua? Use an example in your answer.
- skills are developed through practice.
- continua helps to chose the correct form of practice in training.
- E.g. a netball coach may deduce that a chest pass is an open skill, therefore they introduce variety in training to create that unpredictable environment.
What are the six skill continua?
Open --- Closed Self paced --- Externally paced Gross --- Fine Discrete --- Serial --- Continuous High --- Low Simple --- Complex
Define the term ‘open skill’
Skill affected by the ever changing environment.
E.g. chest pass in netball match, skill affected by players
Define the term ‘closed skill’
Environment is stable and predictable (skill not affected by the environment)
E.g. Vault in gymnastics
Define the term ‘gross skill’
A skill that uses large muscle groups in the body.
E.g. Javelin throw
What is meant by the term ‘fine skill’?
A skill that uses small muscle groups. It is a precise movement showing high levels of accuracy and coordination.
E.g. firing a shot in pistol shooting.
Define the term ‘self paced skill’. Give an example.
Performer decides when to start the skill, and the speed at which the skill is performed.
E.g. Penalty kick in football
What is an externally paced skill?
A skill where the performer has no control over the start or the speed of the skill.
E.g. start of 100m sprint
Define the term ‘highly organised skill’
The skill is hard to break down into sub-routines.
E.g. a football volley
What is a low organised skill?
A skill that is easily broken down into sub-routines.
E.g. front crawl in swimming (leg and arm action can be practiced separately)
What is a simple skill?
A skill that requires little thought process.
E.g. forward roll in gymnastics
What is a complex skill?
A skill that requires a lot of thought and decision making.
E.g. High jump/ dribble in hockey (info includes position of players, ball control and stick control)
