Characteristics of Living Things Flashcards
What are the six characteristics of living things?
- Living things are made of cells.
- Living things move.
- Living things ingest, digest, excrete and respirate.
- Living things respond to surroundings.
- Living things grow and develop.
- Reproduce.
What is a cell?
The basic unit of structure and function in an organism.
What do you need to see most cells?
A microscope.
What are unicellular organisms?
Single-celled organisms (bacteria).
What are multicellular organisms?
Many-celled organisms (humans).
Why do animals need to move?
To get shelter, food and water.
Can plants move?
Parts of plants, but not entire plants.
What is ingest?
Take in food.
What is digest?
Break down food.
What is excrete?
Get rid of waste.
What is respirate?
Chemical reaction to extracting energy from food.
What is cellular respiration.
Cell food + oxygen –> energy + carbon dioxide + water
What is a stimulus?
Change in a organism’s surroundings that causes the organism to react (examples: changes in temperature or light).
What is a reaction/response?
An action or change in behavior.
What is growth?
The process of becoming larger.
