Characteristics of Life Flashcards
Learn the eight characteristics of life
Name the eight characteristics of life.
- Has Cells
- Responds to Stimuli
- Manitains Homeostasis
- Has a Metabolism
- Grows and Developes
- Reproduces
- Evolves (as a species)
- Has DNA
What does this characteistic of life describe.
Has Cells
All living things are made up of cells and have some degree of organization (see levels of organization).
What does this characteistic of life describe.
Responds to Stimuli
All life responds to stimuli (physical or chemical changes within the environment) in order to maitain homeostasis.
What does this characteistic of life describe.
Maintains Homeostasis
All living things try to mainatin homeostasis (a process by which living things try to maintain stable internal conditions suitable for life).
What does this characteistic of life describe.
Has a Metabolism
All living things have a metabolism (the sum of all cheical reactions in living things that help to break down or build chemical compounds).
What does this characteistic of life describe.
Grows and Developes
All living things grow and develope (becoming larger by cell devision).
What does this characteistic of life describe.
Reproduces
All living things produce new organisms like themselves by transfering hereditary information in DNA to offspring.
What does this characteistic of life describe.
Evolves (as a species)
All living things change over time (as a species), by adapting (as a species) to their environment.
What does this characteistic of life describe.
Has DNA
All living thinsg have DNA (the genetic code for life which determines the traits and characteristics of an organism).
