  1. Family rules and norms

  1. Parenting styles
A

An Authoritative parenting style which is both demanding and responsive fosters traits of open communication, rules and consequences, boundaries, maturity and the necessary social skills for healthy relationships.

Parents give children enough freedom of expression and their disciplinary methods are supportive rather than punitive.

Children of such parents are found to have higher self-esteem, social and moral maturity.

  1. Resilience and coping techniques
A

In adversity and challenges, the Avoidance technique, which is characterised by strategies that seek to avoid the emotional consequences of distress, avoids the individual or situation. Something else, such as gambling, alcohol or other substances are used to relieve stress and regulate emotions, leading to further dysfunctionality of the family.
