Characteristic of Organisms (bacteria, virus, fungi, parasite) Flashcards
Viruses (replication mode, cellular membrane, cell wall)
Viruses
Replication: Direct Host cell to make new viruses
Cellular membrane: enveloped or naked (non enveloped)
Cell wall: absent
NOTE: Viruses are neither prokaryotes nor eukaryotes.
Bacteria (replication mode, cellular membrane, cell wall)
Bacteria
Replication: Binary fission (asexual)
Cellular membrane: Yes but no sterols on it except mycoplasmas.
Cell wall: Peptidoglycan
**NOTE: Baterias are prokaryotes. All other organisms are eukaryotes…except viruses, which is Neither prokaryotes or eukaryotes **
Fungi (replication mode, cellular membrane, cell wall)
Fungi
Replication: Cytokinesis with mitosis / meiosis
Cellular membrane: Yes. they have ergosterol and are targetted by antifungal drugs.
Cell wall: Complex carbohydrate cell wall:
- chitin
- glucans
- mannans
NOTE: it is Eukaryotic like every other organism except bacteria (prokaryote and viruse (neither pro nor euk)
Parasites (replication mode, cellular membrane, cell wall)
Parasites
Replication: cytokinesis with Mitosis/ Meiosis
Cellular membrane: Yes. they have sterols like cholesterol
Cell wall: No cell wall.
Prokaryote Vs. Eukaryotes
