Protagonist
The main character of the story.
Antagonist
Some character or force that the main character faces against.
Coming-of-age/bildungsroman
A novel that explores the maturation of the protagonist, where the main character transitions from childhood to adulthood.

Round Characters
Characters such as protagonist that have dimensionality to them.
Flat Characters
Characters that don’t change and are not complex.
Foil
A character that is used to illuminate/highlight a protagonist’s traits through their flatness.
Stock Characters
Characters with stereotypes and can be used as comic relief.
Direct Characterization
When the author directly describes and details a character.
Indirect Characterization
When we learn about characters from what they do, say, and think.
