Protagonist
The main character in a work; often a hero or heroine, but not always
Antagonist
A character in a story or play who opposes the protagonist, maybe the enemy, creates or intensifies a conflict, may be villian
Coming-of-age story
or Bildungsroman
A novel that explores the maturation of the protagonist, with the narrative usually moving the main character from childhood into adulthood
Epiphany
The moment when a character is suddenly struck with a life-changing realization that changes the story
Round character
Character who exhibits a range of emotions and who evolves over the course of the story
Flat character
Embodies 1 or 2 traits, lacks character development, also known as static character, motivates the protagonists
Foil
A contrasting character who allows the protagonist to stand out more distinctly
Stock character
Resist unique characteristics, based on stereotypes, a type of flat character
Direct characterization
Tells whos the character by describing background, motivation, temperament, or appearance of character
Indirect characterization
Author shows us rather than telling us who the character is by what he does, says, or thinks, or what others say
