Chapters 9-11 Quiz Flashcards
Pathogen
a biologic agent capable of causing infectious disease
Examples of pathogens
virus, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, prions, pathogenic animals
Bacteria
single-cell organisms; can be spiral-shaped or rod-shaped and may appear singly or in chains. examples: boils, tuberculosis, gastroenteritis, strep throat, and tetanus
Virus
nonliving entities that depend on a host cell for growth and replications. examples: common cold, influenza, HIV/AIDS, measles, mumps, rabies, herpes simplex, and viral hepatitis
Fungus/Fungi
include molds and yeast and only a few varieties are pathogenic. Examples are: ringworm, athlete’s foot, jock itch, and thrush.
Fomite
contaminated object. during fomite transmission, the infected individual touches an object such as a doorknob and leaves contaminants behind. the object that the infected individual touches, which then becomes contaminated
droplet transmission
the infected individual coughs, sneezes, or spits on a noninfected individual. The noninfected individual must be within a short distance, generally 3 to 6 feet. Most respiratory diseases are from transmission of infected droplets
Infection
the mere presence of a virus does not mean infection will take place. Infection is the invasion of pathogens occuring in a series of events called the chain of infection.
Inflammation
a protective immune response to infection, injury or irritation. The purpse of inflammation is to create an environment that maximizes tissue repair by flooding the area with fluids and by destroying pathogens. Signs of inflammation SHARP. S-swelling, H-heat, A-a loss of function, R-redness, P-pain
Absolute contraindication
represents sitations when massage should be postponed. Situation which include the presence of a contagious disease that can be transmitted to others or when the client has a condition that could become more severe with the application of massage therapy
Areas not in scope of practice
diagnosing, accupuncture, physical therapy,
infectious disease
contagious, communicabe, caused by a pathogen – flu, cold
SOAP
S-subjective, O-objective, A-assessment, P-plan/ning
CARE
C-condition of cleint, A-action taken, R-response of client, E-evaluation
CARE notes are completed after the session and represent what was done (therapist action), why it was done(client condition), and how the client responded to the session.
HIPAA
client info confidential. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. outlines privacy standards for health care providers
