Chapters 8.1- 8.2 Flashcards
DNA structure is the same in….
All organisms.
How many types of nucleotides is DNA composed of?
4
DNA is made up of a long chain of nucleotides, each nucleotide has 3 parts. What are those three parts?
a phosphate group
a deoxyribose sugar
a nitrogen containing base
What is the only difference in the four nucleotides?
The nitrogen containing bases.
What are the 4 nucleotides?
Adenine (A)
Thymine (T)
Guanine (G)
Cytosine (C)
Describe whether Pyrimidine and Purine is single ringed or double ringed and name the nucleotides that go with each.
Pyrimidine- single ringed
Thymine (T)
Cytosine (C)
Purines- double ringed
Adenine (A)
Guanine (G)
What are the base pairing rules for DNA?
- A pairs with T
* C pairs with G
Why does the helix have a uniformed width?
Because a pyrimidine pairs with a purine.
What is the sugar phosphate backbone connected by?
Covalent Bonds.
What are the bases connected by?
Hydrogen Bonds
What are the base pairs and how many hydrogen bonds connect them?
A-T (two hydrogen bonds)
G-C (three hydrogen bonds)
How was DNA identified as the genetic material?
Through a series of experiments.
