the money you have…insurance coverage….transportation
what are health disparities?
different rates of health or illness that marginalized groups have in comparison with privileged counterparts

what is the definition of health?
having complete physical, mental, and social well being
what is illness?
presence of physical or mental disease
what is the quality of life?
relating to when you get a disease relating to function….well being…cognition…your goals..values
what are acute diseases?
a disease or disorder that is short term…..cold…flu…infection
what are chronic diseases?
long-lasting conditions
what is the role of stress in life?
to induce fight or flight
what is the effect of stress on the body?
pre front cortex is used to induce quick thinking
what does constant stress cause?
lowered immune system
what is the stress and coping paradigm?
people respond to things differently…….it is a response to thinking and the environment
what is the diathesis-stress model?
tries to explain how someone will react with the interaction between vulnerability and stresses caused by life experience….for example, children who have a family history of depression are generally more vulnerable to developing a depressive disorder themselves.
what are examples of poor coping?
drugs..rage..denial
what is a primary appraisal?
categorize events into three groups based on the significance they have for the person for well being…..irrelevant, benign of positive, and stressful
what secondary appraisal?
evaluates our perceived ability to cope with harm, threat, or challenge
what is reappraisal?
involves making a new primary and secondary appraisal resulting from changes in the situation
what is coping?
dealing with stressful events
what is problem-based coping?
involves attempts to tackle the problem head-on
what is emotion-focused coping?
involves dealing with one’s feelings about the stressful event
what is polypharmacy?
the study of drugs effects on people
what are the activities of daily living?
things we need to be able to do to live alone…..feed, dress, sit and stand
what are the instrumental activities of daily living?
shopping…cooking..pay bill…driving
What are preventive adaptations?
actions to avoid stressors and increase or build social resources….increasing social network by adding friends
what is the corrective adaptations?
actions takens in respsonse to stressors and can be facilitated by internal and external sources
what is everyday competence?
refers to a per- son’s ability to perform, when necessary, a broad array of activities considered essential for independent living, even though in daily life the individual may not perform these tasks on a regular basis or may only perform a subset of these activities
what are some reasons people enter the long term care program?
