Chapters 4-8 Flashcards
hypertonic
water moves out of cells- shrinking it
hypotonic
water moves in the cells - swells it
isotonic
concentrations are equal
6 functions of a plasma membrane
Transporter Enzyme Cell to cell transmitter Cell to cell adhesion Cell to cytoskeleton Cell identifiers
why do phosopholipids are perfect for making membranes
The head of a phospholipid is hydrophilic and the tail is hydrophobic. The tail folds inwards to get away from water which makes it a very strong membrane.
why do leave change colors in the fall
They change colors because chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b die out and that leaves just the carotenoids absorbing the blues/ violets leaving the plants to reflect yellow, orange, and red.
what is photorespiration and how plants deal with is
Photorespiration happens when oxygen competes with CO2 in Rubisco. That produces toxins so the plants develop CY and CAM pathways to do photosynthesis. Cy- spatial CAM-Temporal
