What is an oxford comma?
The comma after the penultimate item in a list. “Nouns, verbs, and adverbs”.
Give an example of a comma splice.
“Erica was the queen of the prom, she dazzled everyone.”
What is informational discourse?
A discourse designed to deliver information. Packs a lot of information into nouns. Longer words and attributive adjectives.
What is a comma used for?
To mark or set off phrases or groups of words shorter than a sentence.
What are the main uses of the semicolon?
Joining two independent clauses that have a close semantic relationship and in a list where items are long and have punctuation.
Main use of the colon.
To indicate that explanatory material is to follow.
What are discourse markers?
words such as so, now, well, uh, um and lexicalized phrases such as “you know” and “I mean.”
What is involved discourse?
A discourse designed for building relationships. Lots of first- and second- person pronouns. Discourse markers are frequent. Heavy reliance on “to be.” Contractions are frequent.
