Part Three - Pre-Taliban (27-36)

  8. Rasheed asks Laila about Tariq, Laila’s plan to run away is revealed, Laila and Mariam reconcile
  9. Mariam and Laila bond through doing chores and watching Aziza - Mariam tells Laila about her life and Laila tells her secret
  10. Laila and Mariam try to run away but are caught - Rasheed beats Laila and locks her in a room for two days and puts Mariam in the toolshed

Part Three - Taliban rule (37-47)

A
  1. 2.5 year time jump - Mariam, Laila and Rasheed are introduced to the Taliban, Laila and Rasheed clash over the new laws
  2. The Taliban take over Kabul, Rasheed and Laila continue to feud over the laws, Laila comes close to aborting her 2nd child
  3. Mariam and Laila go to the hospital and Laila’s baby is birthed
  4. Fall 1999 - Rasheed and Zalmai bond, they get a new TV, Laila and Rasheed fight over making Aziza beg on the street
  5. The Titanic craze hits Kabul + Rasheed’s shop burning down results in the family going into poverty and Rasheed getting more violent, Mariam and Rasheed go to the InterContinental Hotel to call Jalil (Mariam flashes back to the last time they met), but finds out he has died
  6. The Taliban blow up the giant Buddhas, Laila sends Aziza to an orphanage, Rasheed gets a job as an InterContinental doorman, and Tariq returns
  7. Mariam looks after Zalmai and remembers seeing Tariq at the hotel - realises that Abdul Sharif was lying
  8. Tariq tells Laila what actually happened to him, Rasheed questions Laila about him (reveals he knows her secret)
  9. Rasheed fights Laila and intends to murder her, Mariam and Laila fight back with Mariam killing him
  10. Mariam and Laila hide the body, Mariam decides that Laila and her family will escape somewhere safe while she will turn herself in, they say their goodbyes
  11. Mariam is in women’s prison, Naghma’s story, Mariam has her trial and is executed in Ghazi Stadium

Part Four (48-51)

A
  1. Laila and Tariq arrive in Murree and get married, Aziza loves Tariq while Zalmai hates him
  2. 9/11 happens and the USA declares war on the Taliban after they don’t hand in Bin-Laden (distorted Pashtun code) + Rasheed and Zalmai share a moment
  3. Laila and the family travel back to Kabul; she travels to Herat first where she meets Mullah Faizullah’s son, they go back to the kolba and Laila gets Jalil’s gift for Mariam - a letter, a tape of Pinnochio, and Mariam’s inheritance
  4. Laila and Tariq live happily in Deh-Mazang + they go back to the orphanage + Laila is pregnant again
