CHAPTERS 10.1-10.3 Flashcards
what percentage is the supply of fresh water in the world
2.5%
what is the polarity of water?
water is polar
why does water have a high BP and MP?
hydrogen bonding between water molecules
why is solid water more dense than liquid water?
solid water exhibits a hexagonal lattice which means the molecules are further apart, therefore making it more dense. liquid water has molecules that constantly break and reform h bonds and the molecules are closer together, making it less dense.
what is specific heat capacity?
the energy it take (in J) to raise the temperature of 1g of a substance by 1 °C
what is the specific heat capacity of water?
4.18 J-1g°C-1
what is the equation for solving the SHC?
q = mcΔT
q = energy (J)
m = mass (g)
ΔT = change in temperature
what is latent heat?
latent heat is the amount of energy required to change the state of 1 mol of a substance (kJ mol-1)
what is latent head of fusion?
how much energy it takes to change one mol of substance from solid to liquid at its melting point
what is waters latent heat of fusion?
6.0 kJ mol-1
what is latent heat of vaporisation?
how much energy is needed to change one mole of the substance from liquid to gas at boiling point
what is waters latent heat of vaporisation?
40.7 kJ mol-1
what is the equation for latent heat?
q = nL
q = energy (J)
n = number of mol
L = latent heat (J mol-1)
