Imagine if the men talked to or looked at them they could use their bodies to make a deal.

Marthas are household servants. Wives are the wives of the Commander (the owner of the house the handmaids are staying in)
What did Offred’s new mistress tell her on her first day there?
To stay out of her sight as much as possible, and to avoid making trouble. Emphasises how terrible their living conditions are due to how they’re treated.
