Chapter1- How Science Works-1.6 Flashcards
Hypothesis
Testable answer to your question
Prediction
Statement of some condition that should exist if the hypothesis is correct
Test
Is the process of the accuracy of your prediction by making observations and conducting experiments
Model
Is an object of an analogous system if you cannot observe or test directly
Scientific method
Involves observations, questions, hypothesis, predictions, observation plaza experiment to test plus reports
(A logical, systematic approach to the solution of a scientific problem)
Scientific theory
Hypothesis that has not been disproven after many years of righteous testing and is useful for making predictions
-not just an opinion but must be supported by different kind of tests
Experiments
Test designed to support or falsify a prediction
Variable
Some kind of characteristic or event that differs among individuals or systems that may change over time
Independent variable
The actual thing that you are testing and changing across your experimental groups, also called the “manipulated variable.”
Fertilizer (nitrogen) is the independent variable.
Dependent Variable – The response to your independent variable, this is sometimes called the “responding variable.”
Dependent variable
Dependent Variable – The response to your independent variable, this is sometimes called the “responding variable.”
Control group
The group that does not receive an experimental change or treatment. This is to determine if the independent variable actually causes a difference to compare
