Chapter 1-Levels Of Organization-1.1 Flashcards
Nature
Is all things in the universe excluding things humans manufactured(anything artificial )
Atom -1
Fundamental unit of all substances
~ex:carbon
Molecules -2
Atoms joined in a chemical bond
~ in nature only living cells can make molecules of life :complex carbohydrates ,lipids ,proteins, DNA,RNA and nucleic acid‘s
~macro molecule (next)
~ex: o—-C-—o
Cells -3
Smallest unit of life that is able to survive and reproduce by itself
~ given information in DNA energy, inputs, raw materials and suitable environment conditions
~ex:red blood cell
Tissue -4
Organize the array of cells and substances that interact during the same task
Organism -5
Individual which consists of one or more cells
~ in large multi celled organisms trillions of cells organize into tissues, organs, organ systems are working to keep the body alive
~ex:elk
Population -6
Is a group of single or multi celled individuals of the same kind of organisms or species in a specified area
~ Group of elk plus other animals interacting
Community-7
Consist of all populations of all species in a specified area
~includes seaweeds, Fishes, corals, shrimp etc.
~ maybe large or small depends on defined area
~ex: A ton of populations acting together where there is competition
Ecosystem -8
Is a community that interacts with its physical environment through inputs and outputs of energy and materials which are physical or chemical
~ex:water, light, life
Biosphere -9
Deals with all regions of earths water, crass, and atmosphere where organisms live
~where ever life can be found
Emergent properties
Characteristics of a system that appear in first level of a cell but not at any lower level of organization in nature
~ex: molecules are alive then seeing them different no one would predict their arrangement in a living cell
Things to remember
- nature shows levels of organization from simple to complex
- Life emerges as certain kinds of molecules become organized into cells
- greater levels go to multicelled to the biosphere
