Chapter Two: Assessment and Questions about Human Nature Flashcards
What does Freud’s theory say about nature vs nurture?
Freud stands in the middle. The id is an inherited structure. Yet, child-parent interactions influence personality.
What does Freud’s theory say about past vs present?
Freud remains past focused. This is because he believes personality is developed in the first five years of life.
What does Freud say about unique vs universal.
Freud stands in the middle. The id is the same for everyone but the ego and superego’s content varies.
What does Freud say about free will vs determinism?
Freud stood with determinism. Everything we do is pre determined by life and death instincts.
What was the goal of psychoanalysis?
To bring repressed memories, fears, and thoughts back into conscious awareness.
What methods of assessment did Freud use?
Free association and dream analysis.
What is free association?
Saying what comes to mind.
What is dream analysis?
Interpreting unconscious content.
What is catharsis?
The expression of emotions that is supposed to lead to a reduction of disturbing symptoms.
What are resistances?
A blockage or refusal to express themselves during free association.
What were the two aspects of dreams for Freud?
The manifest content and latent content.
What is the manifest content?
The actual events in the dream.
What is the latent content?
The hidden symbolic meaning of the dream.
What are some criticisms of Freuds use of the case study?
That it is subjective, data is not gathered systemically, and psychoanalysis can not be duplicated or verified.
What was the criticism involving the nature of his data?
That Freud did not take notes during his sessions but hours later. That his memory was selective and he only recorded experiences that supported his theory.
