First party logistics provider
Is a firm or an individual that needs to have cargo, freight, goods, produce or merchandise
transported from a point A to a point B
Logistics activities are executed by the company itself
2PL
Second-Party Logistics Provider
• Is an asset-based carrier, which actually owns the means of transportation
• Typical 2PLs (or so-called transport providers) would e.g. be shipping lines / airlines / truck
companies which own, lease or charter their ships / planes / trucks
• Ultimate supplier of the transportation (courier, trucker, carrier, airline, vessel)
FF
Freight Forwarder
• FF do not actually move freight themselves; they provide logistics services as an intermediary
between shipper and transport providers
• Freight forwarding is the coordination and shipment of goods from one destination to another using
single or multiple carriers (including air, marine, rail, or highway)
• FF are able to take care of a full range of services, from tracking inland transportation, booking
cargo space, negotiating freight changes, preparing shipping and export documents, and even filing
insurance claims
3PL
Third-Party Logistics Provider
• 3PLs manage a function
• Transport and Warehouse Mgmt, Inventory Mgmt, Freight Forwarding
• “Contract Logistics” Provider in Europe

4PL
Fourth-Party Logistics Provider
• 4PLs manage a process
• Complete outsourced SCM solution
• Non-asset-owning service provider, their role is to provide broader scope
managing of the entire supply chain

• Manages a group of 3PL’s
