Chapter Two Flashcards
Baseline
An initial level of performance at which an organization, process, or function is operating upon which future performance will be measured
Clinical Practice guidelines
Systematically developed statements to assist practitioner and patient decisions about appropriate healthcare for specific clinical circumstances
Data
Factual information used as a basis for measuring performance; often refers to quanitative information. It is plural in form; the singular is datum
Denominator for performance measure
Population under study; the population “at risk” of being counted in the number of the performance measure. A measurement results when a numerator is divided by a denominator
Indicator
A measure of performance over time; often used synonymously with performance measure
Measurement
A quanitative or qualitative parameter used to determine the degree of performance
Numerator of performance measure
Events specified as evidence of performance; A measurement results when a numerator is divided by a denominator
Outcome measure
Measurement used to determine whether healthcare activities have had the intended effect
Performance goal
Desired condition or target level of performance against which actual performance can be compared
Performance measurement set
A set of inter-related structure, process, and outcome measures used together to evaluate performance in a unit or department or a specified patient population
Performance result
Actual performance level for a measurement
Process measure
Measurement used to determine satisfactory completion of healthcare activities
Realiability (statistical)
Consistency of data obtained from a data collection instrument or through human judgment
Structure measure
Measurement used to determine the adequacy of the environment in which healthcare services are delivered
Validity
Soundness of the use and interpretation of a measurement
