What is Production Planning ?
- Production planning is setting goals for the production department, by establishing programs and procedures to achieve these goals.
- Involves everything from the individual roles of staff, ordering of stock, to the final delivery to the customer

- Includes layout of a factory and the flow of materials through the process.
- Includes decisions of the purchasing of materials, machinery and equipment.

- Routing establishes the best and cheaper way to sequence the production process
- Sets up actual route which materials must follow in the process to save time and costs.
Routine determines the following aspects :
- Quality and the type of raw material
- Manufacturing process and sequence
- Specifications of the final product
- Cost analysis

- Allocates each person or machine to their task
- Loading calculates the amount of time each machine will need to operate during a day
Scheduling
- Scheduling involves the timing of the production process
- Scheduling takes into consider the routing and loading of both labour and machinery
- Calculates required time for each activity in manufacturing process.
What are the advantages of production planning ?
- Planning reduces wastage and unnecessary storage costs.
- Planning will prevent time being wasted, and increase the number of final products
- Company can ensure they have the correct amount of suppliers and stock at a given time.
- Involves quality checks, ensures correct quality is reached in the shortened possible time.
What is the meaning of production control ?
- Production Control ensures that production is undertaken according to the production plan.
- It includes dispatching, following up inspections, and corrective action
What are the aspects that must be considered during production control ?
Dispatching ꕤ
- Dispatching is PUTTING the production plan and schedule into ACTION.
- Identifies the person who’ll do the work, supplies the spefic actions and material.
Following up or controlling ꕤ
- Following up makes sure the scheduling and production systems are RUNNING according to the plan
- Deals with unplanned problems and sorts out any misunderstandings in terms of job process requirements
Inspection ꕤ
- Inspection involves the checking of the quality of the process and the final product.
- Done at regular intervals during the production process as well as at the end.
Corrective action ꕤ
- Involves any adjustments to the planning process
- Staff issues are dealt with corrective action
