Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
Encourages schools to employ comprehensive services that are framed within multi-tiered system of support (MTSS).
Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)
Described as a robust evidence-based approach to integrate psychoeducational services & interventions throughout the school system.
The three qualitative labels used to characterize threats from the Virginia model are:
Transient
Substantive
Imminent
Suicide Prevention/Intervention
NASP asserts that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among school aged youth.
Contagion
Term used to signify that one’s actions might spread to others & promote more suicidal behavior, especially among teens.
Specific reactions of youth to crisis or extreme stress:
Very young children (0 to 5 years):
Thumb sucking, bed wetting, separation anxiety, clinging to parents, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, fear of the darkness, regression in behavior, & withdrawal from friends & routines.
Elementary school children:
Fear & safety issues, aggressiveness, irritability, clinginess, nightmares, avoidance of routine activities, school problems, poor concentration, & withdrawal.
Adolescence:
Sleeping & eating disturbances, extreme emotions such as agitation, increase in interpersonal conflicts, somatic complaints, delinquent behavior, & pour attention or focus.
Known key characteristics of post traumatic trust disorder (PTSD):
PTSD is a normal human response to extreme stress or disorder. People with PTSD have high anxiety & their reactions to stress are extreme.
Obsessive thoughts about the crisis event, sleep problems, hyperarousal (vigilance), & externalizing behaviors such as avoidance are common symptoms of PTSD.
It is common for some people to have an irresistible compulsion to retell the story of a crisis or trauma. This behavior is normal & is associated with the minds way of processing the event to integrate the information into the person’s experience. Some experts believe that people repeat the event & recycle it in their mind in order to “make sense” of the trauma.
