Chapter Three Flashcards
What does the following hazard sign mean?
Harmful to the Environment
Why is it important to look for CE and EN numbers when buying PPE
Answer: Quality. They are made with certain materials to provide adequate levels of protection against pesticide contamination
CE (Communicate Europlanne) mark & EN (European Norme) Number
What is the name of the unit located at Beaumont Hospital Dublin which provides information and help about pesticide poisoning?
Answer: Poisons Information Centre at Beaumont Hospital
If someone gets a splash of pesticide in the eyes, what first aid procedures should be carried out?
Hold eyelids open and flush with a gentle, steady stream of water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention
If someone gets a splash of pesticide on their skin, what first aid procedures should be carried out?
Remove all contaminated clothing and shoes immediately, wash affected area with large amounts of soap and water (for approx. 15-20 mins)
What does the term ‘Spray Drift’ mean and how can it be reduced?
in windy weather the pesticide is being sprayed over non target areas like other crops or to hedgerows and water ways which can cause threat to nature and flora and fauna & in some cases long term damage to the environment
Can be reduced by:
1. Avoid spraying in windy conditions and very warm sunny conditions.
2. Use of spray nozzles which produce a minimum of droplets in the drift-prone size range, in particular below 100 microns
What is the difference between a selective and non-selective herbicide?
Non selective herbicides have the objective of killing all the vegetation present for example killing off grassland before reseeding
Selective applications are intended to kill some plants without seriously affecting others. Most pesticides applied to cultivated crops to control weeds and fungi are selective
Explain the term Pre sowing herbicide application?
when a herbicide is applied before the crop is sown it is referred to as pre sowing. At this stage, emerged weeds may already be present and the herbicide may have a contact or translocated affect
- Explain the term pre emergence herbicide application?
it is applied after the crop is sown but before the crop has emerged. The effect of this may be contact foliage, translocated foliage or residual according to the stage of development of the weeds and nature of the herbicide.
- What is a foliar acting herbicide?
Foliar herbicides are applied to the leaves or stems of plants to be absorbed and carried throughout the plant to affect control. They are common and widely used to control annual and perennial herbs and also woody shrub
What is a systemic acting herbicide?
Systemic/Translocated foliage are absorbed into the plant systems and translocated within the plant via the phloem vessels complete coverage of target plant is not necessary and good control can be achieved with low volume spraying. In the case of herbicides, they move down the root system
A single drop of MCPA can be enough to breach the drinking water limit in a small stream for ___km?
30 km
How many times should an empty container be rinsed out?
3 times.
Describe best practice when filling / washing out the sprayer?
Wash out sprayer with water and detergent and drain safely.
Wash all potective clothing at the end of each day - including the inside of rubber gloves.
Wash yourself and personal clothing.
- What does the term LD stand for?
Lethal Dose
