Q

Why is it important to look for CE and EN numbers when buying PPE

A

Answer: Quality. They are made with certain materials to provide adequate levels of protection against pesticide contamination
CE (Communicate Europlanne) mark & EN (European Norme) Number

Q

What does the term ‘Spray Drift’ mean and how can it be reduced?

A

in windy weather the pesticide is being sprayed over non target areas like other crops or to hedgerows and water ways which can cause threat to nature and flora and fauna & in some cases long term damage to the environment
Can be reduced by:
1. Avoid spraying in windy conditions and very warm sunny conditions.
2. Use of spray nozzles which produce a minimum of droplets in the drift-prone size range, in particular below 100 microns

Q

What is the difference between a selective and non-selective herbicide?

A

Non selective herbicides have the objective of killing all the vegetation present for example killing off grassland before reseeding
Selective applications are intended to kill some plants without seriously affecting others. Most pesticides applied to cultivated crops to control weeds and fungi are selective

Q

Explain the term Pre sowing herbicide application?

A

when a herbicide is applied before the crop is sown it is referred to as pre sowing. At this stage, emerged weeds may already be present and the herbicide may have a contact or translocated affect

Q
  1. Explain the term pre emergence herbicide application?
A

it is applied after the crop is sown but before the crop has emerged. The effect of this may be contact foliage, translocated foliage or residual according to the stage of development of the weeds and nature of the herbicide.

Q
  1. What is a foliar acting herbicide?
A

Foliar herbicides are applied to the leaves or stems of plants to be absorbed and carried throughout the plant to affect control. They are common and widely used to control annual and perennial herbs and also woody shrub

Q

What is a systemic acting herbicide?

A

Systemic/Translocated foliage are absorbed into the plant systems and translocated within the plant via the phloem vessels complete coverage of target plant is not necessary and good control can be achieved with low volume spraying. In the case of herbicides, they move down the root system

Q

Explain STRIPE?

A

Surface water Tool for Reducing the Impact of Pesticides on the Environment
It is a tool used by growers to reduce the buffer margin in fields when using boom sprayers fitted with drift reducing nozzles. It allows the farmer to make more effective use of their agricultural land while helping to protect aquatic life from pesticide contamination by reducing exposure

17
Q

Explain the term ‘’Biocides’’

A

Biocides control the intended target organism by a chemical or biological action they include; disinfectants, preservatives, insect repellents, rodenticides and insecticides

18
Q

SMR ___ deals with plant protection products and biocides

A

SMR __10_ deals with plant protection products and biocides

19
Q

Rodenticides should be used in accordance with an approved code of best practice such as the CRRU Ireland Best Practice Requirements. One of the CRRU codes is always to record quality of bait used and where it is placed, list 4 others?

A

Always use enough baiting points
Always inspect bait regularly
Never leave bait exposed to non-target animals and birds
Always collect and dispose of rodent bodies
Never leave bait down at the end of treatment
