What is a reserve?
An area of land that is legally owned by the federal government but is set aside for the use of a specific first nations group
What is a residential school?
A boarding school set up for the purpose of educating and assimilating aboriginal children
What is the Indian act?
A act passed by the Canadian government in 1876 and amended several time since which makes “Indians and the lands reserved for the Indians” the responsibility of the government
What is a lobby group?
A group of citizens that bond together to being an issue or demand to the government and push for change
What is royal commission?
A committee appointed by the federal government to investigate and write a report about a specific topic
What is a statement of reconciliation?
An official acknowledgement of wrongs committed against aboriginal peoples and a pledge to address these wrong
What is a self-government?
Aboriginal people gaining control over key elements in their own communities such as the courts and education
