Chapter Six - Cardiovascular Flashcards
Diastole
Heart relaxes and fills with blood
Systole
Heart contracts and pumps blood
Sinoatrial Node (SA Node)
Pacemaker of the heart, small patch of tissue that initiates heart beat
Arteriosclerosis
Hardening of blood vessels and arteries
Atherosclerosis
Accumulation of fatty material under the inner lining of the arterial wall
Ischemia
Deficiency of blood supply to an organ
Myocardial Infarction
Heart attack
Angia Pectoris
Temporary chest pain/pressure caused by insufficient oxygen
Nitroglycerin
Medication used to dialate coronary arteries, permitting adequate blood flow
Pulmonary Edema
Fluid in the lungs causing shortness of breath
Cyanosis
Bluish color of the skin and the mucous membranes due to insufficient oxygen in the blood
Dyspnea
Air hunger resulting in labored or difficult breathing
Cardiologist
Heart specialist
Hypertension
High BP
Arrythmeia
Deviation from the normal rhythm of the heartbeat
Tachycardia
Heart rate of 100 beats per minute
Echocardiography
Noninvasive procedure (ultrasound, cardiography) that utilizes high-frequency sound waves to examine size, shape, and motion of heart structures
Aneurysm
Localized dialation caused by a weakening in the wall of a blood vessel
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Heart and lung assistance by trained personnel to rhythmically compress the chest and breathe into the victims airway until medical services can be provided
Angioplasty
Procedure by which a balloon-top catheter is inserted into the coronary arteries and expanded to break plaque build-up
Tetralogy of Fallot
One of the most serious congenital defects consisting of four (tetra) abnoralities
Pulmonary Stenosis
First cause of cyanosis in which the valve opening that leads into the pulmonary artery is too small and an inadequate amount of blood reaches the lungs to be oxygenated
Syncope
Fainting caused by insufficient blood supply to the brain
Endocardidtis
Inflammation with in the heart
Necrotic
Dead tissue caused by lack of blood flow
Phlebitis
Inflammation of a vein (usually in the leg)
Auscultation
Listening with a stethoscope for sounds within the body
Hemorroids
Varicose veins of the rectum or anus
