Chapter ??: Sampling Flashcards
Sampling
The process of obtaining information from a subset of a larger group.
Population
The entire group of people about whom information is needed; also called the universe or population
Census
Data collection from or about every member of the population of interest. Also called canvassing the population by asking everyone a set of questions.
Sample
A subset of all members of a population of interest. Hopefully that subset is statistically representative of the general population.
Probability Sampling
Everyone in the population has a known, nonzero, likelihood of selection.
Nonprobability Sampling
Samles in which specific elements from the population have been selected in a nonrandom manner.
Sampling Frame
List of population elements from which units to be sampled can be selected or a specified procedure for generating such a list.
Random-Digit Dialing
Method of generating lists of telephone numbers at random.
Steps in Developing A Sampling Plan?
- Define the Population of Interest
- Choose a data-collection method
- Identify a sampling frame
- Select a sampling method
- Determine sample size
- Develop operational procedures for selecting sample elements
- Execute the operational sampling plan

Probability Samples
Samples in which every element of the population has a known, nonzero likelihood of selection
Nonprobability Samples
Samples in which specific elements from the population have been selected in a nonrandom manner
Sample Size
The identified and selected population subset for the survey, chosen because it represents the entire group.
Acceptable error
the difference between sample result and population value
Levels of Confidence
The likelihood that the confidence interval - sample result plus or minus the acceptable error - will take in the true population
