Chapter(s) 3, 4 and 5 Flashcards
Define species
a group of organisms that are so similar to one an other that they can bread and produce fertile offspring.
Define population
A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.
Define community
Assemblages of different populations that live together in a defined area.
Define Ecosystem
A collection of organisms that live in a particular place together with their nonliving or physical environment.
Define autotroph, consumer, heterotroph, detritivore
Autotrophs use energy from the environment to fuel the assemble of simple inorganic compounds into complex organic Molocuels. They make their own food and are called producers.
Heterotroph: Organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply.
Consumer: Heterotrophs
Detritovers: Are mites earthworms snails and crabs they feed on plant and animal remains and other dead matter.
Define biomass
The total amount of living tissue in a given trophic level.
List the three processes that occur in the carbon cycle.
respiration of co2 and volcanic eruption go into atmosphere….
Plants take the co2 and make food for humans and animals to eat.
Then we pass and then it decomposes and is brought back into the atmosphere.
Define ecology
The study or interactions among organisms in between organisms and their environment or surroundings.
Define biosphere
Part of earth in which life exists including land, water and atmosphere.
Define herbivore, omnivore, carnivore, detritivore
Herbivore: eats only plants
Carnivore: meat
Omnivores: Plants and animals
Detritivores: Feed on dead matter
Define a food web
A food web links all the food chains in an ecosystem together.
Describe the water cycle
- Water evaporates
- Water condensates in clouds
3.Water falls as precipitation
……..Runoff, Seepage and root uptake and the restart
Define niche. How can similar organisms live in the same niche.
Niche is a full range of physical and biological condition in which an organisms lives and the way in which the organism uses those conditions. Bull frogs live near ponds and fish live near ponds for the reason they obtain food.
Define abiotic. List 3 abiotic factors
Abiotic: Nonliving
- temp
- wind
- sunlight
Define the greenhouse effect
Natural situation in which heat is retained in earth’s atmosphere by co2, methane, water vapor and other gasses.
