Chapter One Vocabulary Flashcards
Carbohydrates
Compound made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen Atoms. Major source of energy for the body
CHO
Proteins
Macromolecule that contains carbon hydrogen oxygen and nitrogen.
Needed for growth and repair
CHON
Lipids/fat
Macromolecule made mostly from carbon and hydrogen atoms. Includes fats oils and waxes.
CH
Nucleic acid
Macromolecule containing carbon hydrogen oxygen nitrogen and phosphorus
CHONP
Cohesion
Attraction between molecules of the same substance. Example – spilling a substance onto the ground (how far will it spell out) or raindrops
Adhesion
Force of attraction between different kinds of molecules. Example – the straw and water going/rising up
Heat capacity
The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature
Solvent
Dissolving substance in a solution
Solute
Substance that is dissolved in a solution
Solution
Type of Mixture in which all the components are evenly distributed
Mixture
Material composed of two or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed but not chemically combined
Enzymes
Protein catalysts that speeds up the rate of specific biological reactions
Homeostasis
Relevantly constant internal physical and chemical conditions that organisms maintain
Organic
Derived from living matter/relating to a bodily organ or organs
Fermentation
Process by which cells release energy in the absence of oxygen
