- everyone accepts ralph as the leader even jack who is jealous
- Shows how they are sticking to rules, law and order old their old life

- boys feel excited as they go exploring (They have conquered the island it belongs to them)

- Jack humiliated when ralph is chosen as chief over him, reflects tension between jack and ralph later in the story.
