Basic Spanish Pronunciation Study Card
Basic Spanish Pronunciation Spanish pronunciation is consistent with its spelling, featuring five vowel sounds and three main rules for syllable stress. Vowels a as in "father" e as in "bait" i as in "beet" o as in "boat" u as in "boot" Each vowel is pronounced clearly. The u is silent in combinations like gue and gui. Word Stress Words ending in a vowel, n, or s stress the second-to-last syllable. Words ending in other consonants stress the last syllable. Words that don’t fit these rules use a written accent on the stressed syllable. Consonants with Multiple Pronunciations C can sound like k or s depending on the following letter. G can sound like g or h depending on the following letter. H is silent, r is tapped or rolled, ch is like in "chair," b and v are similar, j and ll vary by region, and ñ is like the ny in "canyon."
