Juvenile Delinquency
an act committed by a minor that violates the penal code of the government with authority over the area in which the act occurs
Adolescence
the life interval between childhood and adulthood; usually defined as the period between ages 12 and 18
Youth Culture
the unique beliefs, behaviors, and symbols that represent young people in society
Juvenile
a youth at or below the upper age of juvenile court jurisdiction in a particular state
Positive Youth Development
(PYD) a comprehensive way of thinking about adolescence that challenges the tradition deficit-based perspective by pointing out that youths can sometimes thrive even in the presence of multiple risk factors; suggests that youth can develop and flourish when they are connected to the right mix of opportunities, relationships, and social assets
At Risk Youth
those who are extremely vulnerable to the negative consequences of school failure, substance abuse, and early sexuality

Delinquency
A violation of social norms;
May vary across: time, societies, groups within a single society, and situation
Delinquent Youth
a young person who has committed a crime or violated probation; definition may vary by juvenile codes from each state/country
Status Offense
a nondelinquent/noncriminal offense; an offense that is illegal for an underage person, but not for adults
Status Offender
a juvenile who commits a minor act that is considered illegal only because (s)he is underage
