Chapter Four: Molecular Bio In Medical Diagnosis Flashcards
What is rational drug design?
Involves finding out how the infective agent works against a cell and using that information to design a drug that prevents the infective agent from being able to do what it does.
Technique in which the active site of a molecule is determined and a second molecule (the drug) is constructed to fit into that active site to inhibit the activity of the first molecule.
What is haemagglutinin?
Active in gaining entry to a cell.
What is Neuraminidase?
Allows the exit from a cell.
Define immunity.
Capacity to respond immediately I you come into contact with the same causative agent again, and no symptoms develop.
(The proteins in the outer layer of influenza viruses are continuously changing into new strains-no immunity)
