Chapter Eight - Piagets Four Stages Of Cognitive Development Flashcards
What happens in piaget’s first stage?
Babies are exploring their world by the 5 senses.
What is the first stage of piaget’s four stages of cognitive development and what is it’s time period?
Sensorimotor stage (birth to 2 years of age)
What is object permanence? Happens in this first stage.
Babies lack this. They think that things no longer exist because they are out of sight and or sound.
What do they also develop in this stage? (Piaget’s first stage)
Stranger anxiety.
What is the second stage of cognitive development?
Preoperational stage
Major characteristics of this second stage?
Pretend play, language development
What is egocentrism?
A child’s inability to see things or appreciate things from anyone’s perspective other than their own. (Selfish)
What is animism?
The belief that inanimate objects can have feelings or behaviors.
What is centration/centrism?
A child’s inability to focus on more than one characteristic.
Ex. Does your mom have a sister?
“No she’s my mom”
What is conservation?
The principle that mass, volume, and number remain the same despite changes in the form of these objects
What is reversibility?
Kids in this stage lack this. “The principle that the steps taken to solve a mathematical equation can be done in reverse to get the Initial answer.”
What’s gender constancy/gender consistency?
By the time that preoperational stage is over, children will understand that genders are constant over time in all situations.
What is the third stage of cognitive development?
Concrete operational
What happens in the third stage of cognitive development?
Logical and critical thinking occurs about concrete events. (Things they have experience with)
What is the fourth stage of cognitive development?
Formal operational.
