Green Revolution
The development and introduction of new varieties of (mainly) wheat and rice that has increased yields per acre dramatically in many countries since the 1960s
Conservation Reserve Program
A federal program whereby farmers are paid to place highly erodible cropland in a reserve
Subsistence farmers
Farming that meets the food needs of farmers and their families, but little more; involved hand labor and is practiced extensively in the developing world
Doubly Green Revolution
A revolution that is even more productive than the first Green Revolution and even more ‘green’ in terms of conserving natural resources and the environment
Cartagena Protocol on Biodiversity
An international agreement governing race in genetically modified organisms; signed in January 2000
Precautionary principle
The principle that says that where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage, the absence of scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation
Malnutrition
The lack of essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and amino acids; ranges from mild to severe and life threatening
Undernourishment
A form of hunger in which the individual lacks adequate food energy, as measured in calories; starvation is the most serve form of undernutrition
Famine
A severe shortage of food accompanied by a significant increase in the local or regional death rate
Cash crops
A crop produced for its commercial value rather than for use by the grower
