Define: community paramedicine
a healt care model in which experienced paramedics receive advanced training to equip them to provide additional services in the prehospital environment, such as health evaluations, monitoring of chronic illnesses or conditions, and pt advocacy
Define: continuum of care
the concept of consistent pt care across the entire health care team from first pt contact to pt discharge; working together w/a unified goal results in improved individual and team performance, better pt and provider safety, and improved pt outcome
crew resource mangement (CRM)
a set of procedures for use in environments where human error can have disatrous consequences. It empowers people within a team to communicate effectively with one another with a goal of improving team situational awareness, pt and crew safety, and overall communication
Define: group
in the context of EMS, a collection of individual health care providers working independently to help the pt
Define: mobile integrated healthcare (MIH)
a method of delivering health care that involves providing health care within the community rather than at a physician’s office or hospital
Define: situational awareness
knowledge and understanding of one’s surroundings and the ability to recognize potential risks to the safety of the pt or EMS team
Define: team
in the context of EMS, a group of health care providers who are assigned specific roles and are working interdependently in a coordinated manner under a designated leader
Define: team leader
the team member who provides role assignments, coordination, oversight, centralized decision making, and support for the team to accomplish their goals and achieve desired results
What is “just culture”?
an approach to leadership in organizations that balances fairness and accountability and encourages people to report errors and near misses. Focuses on risk management

What is the goal of an EMS team?
Solving the clinical problem, not simply completing a procedure
(all members should have wider goal in forefront of mind)
List and describe the 3 common decision-making traps in EMS
- Bias: considering only one possible idea and ignoring or not seeking other data - not considering other things
- Anchoring - EMT settles on one possible cause of problem or early fails to assume other options - EMT has already decided
- Overconfidence - EMT ignores others when they disagree w a decision
