Chapter 9: The Nervous System Flashcards
Functions of the nervous system
feeling, thinking, moving, awareness, coordination of body functions, homeostasis, responsiveness to changes
Neurons (nerve cells)
-Main cell type in nervous system.
-communicate via electrical impulses.
-typically have a cell body,an axon and dendrites.
Where do neurons communicate?
synapse
Neurons communicate with other neurons or with cells outside of the nervous system at a small space between the cells, called a synapse
Neurotransmitters
the chemical messengers in a synapse, that convey an electrical impulse from a neuron to another cell.
The nervous system is divided into:
2 groups:
- Central nervous system (CNS)
- Peripheral nervous system (PN)
Central nervous system (CNS)
made up of the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system (PN)
made up of nerves that connect the CNS to the rest of the body.
sensory function of nervous system
provided by sensory receptors at the ends of peripheral neurons, which gather information and convert it into nerve impulses
Integrative function
Impulses are conducted along peripheral nerves into the CNS, where they come together to create sensations, memories, or thoughts that are converted into perception; this is the integrative function of the nervous system
