a work group
a group that interacts primarily to share information and make decisions to help each member perform within that member’s area of responsibility
a work team
generates positive synergy through a coordinated effort
problem solving team
5-12 people from same department who meet to discuss ways of improving quality, efficiency, and the work environment
self managed work teams
10-15 people who perform highly related or interdependent jobs with some supervisory responsibilities - can be effective with the right personalities
cross functional teams
employees from the same hierarchical level but from different work areas who come together to accomplish a task - not simple to manage
virtual teams
use technology to to unite physically dispersed members
how to make virtual teams effective
establish trust, closely monitor progress, publicize efforts and products
multiteam systems
collections of 2 or more interdependent teams that together have a higher, shared goal - “a team of teams” - perform better when someone organizes all the subteams

be sure candidates can fulfill their team roles as well as technical requirements. top talent might not always be best choice

rewarding and providing incentives to be a good team player
how to be effective team player
show up and be present. be aware. respect. listen. be responsible. be proactive. be flexible. give credit when due.
disadvantages of teams
take more time and resources, have increased communication demands, more conflicts to manage, more meetings to run
3 tests to know whether a team or individual is better
- can the work be done better by more than one person?
- does the work create a common purpose or set of goals for the people in the group that is more than the aggregate of individual goals?
- determine whether the members of the group are interdependent
