Chapter 9: shaping Flashcards
1
Q
Shaping
A
Differential reinforcement of successive approximations of a target behavior until the person exhibits the target behavior
2
Q
Differential reinforcement
A
occurs when one particular behavior is reinforced, and all other behaviors are placed on extinction
3
Q
Successive approximations
A
Shaping steps that are closer and closer to the target behavior
4
Q
When is shaping used?
A
- Generating a novel behavior
- Reinstating a previously exhibited behavior
- changing some dimension of an existing behavior
5
Q
Using Shaping: 7 steps
A
- Define target behavior
- Is shaping the preferred procedure?
- ID the starting behavior
- Choose the shaping steps
- Choose the reinforcer
- Differentially reinforce each successive approximation
- Move at the proper pace and go back to the previous approximation if necessary
