Chapter 10: Prompting and stimulus control Flashcards

1
Q

What is prompting and transfer of stimulus control used for?

A
  • Developing stimulus control (to get the target behavior to occur at the right time–in the presence of the Sd)
  • Developing new behaviors (ex. teaching a child to hit a baseball)

Q

what is the function of prompts?

A

The function of prompts is to produce an instance of the correct behavior so that it can be reinforced. The use of prompts makes teaching or training more efficient.

Q

What is a prompt?

A

A stimulus or event given before or during a response in the presence of the Sd. A prompt increases the probability that the behavior will occur in the correct situation so the behavior can be reinforced

Q

What is fading?

A

The gradual elimination of the prompt as the behavior continues to occur in the presence of the Sd.

Q

Response prompts

A

involve the behavior of another person that evoke the desired response in the presence of the Sd
(verbal, gestural, modeling, and physical)

Q

Stimulus prompts

A

involves a change in an antecedent stimulus, or the addition or removal of a stimulus, to make a correct response more likely to occur
(within stimulus and extra stimulus)

Q

Within stimulus prompt

A

changes in the Sd in some way….increase the salience of the stimulus

Q

Transfer of stimulus control

A

getting the behavior to occur in the presence of the Sd without prompts (prompt fading, stimulus fading, prompt delay)

Q

Verbal prompt

A

when the verbal behavior of another person results in the correct response in the presence of the Sd (ex. rules, instructions)

Q

Gestural prompts

A

any physical movement or gesture of another person the leads to the correct behavior in the presence of the Sd (foist show entire behavior just part)

Q

Modeling prompts

A

any demo of the correct behavior by another person that makes it more likely that the correct behavior will occur at the right time

Q

Physical prompts

A

another person physically helps a person to engage in the correct behavior at the right time (physical guidance)

17
Q

7 steps in using prompting and fading

A
  1. choose the most appropriate prompt strategy
  2. get the learners attention (orienting)
  3. Present the Sd
  4. prompt the correct response
  5. Reinforce the correct response
  6. Transfer stimulus control (fade the prompts over trials)
  7. Continue to reinforce unprompted responses
