Chapter 9: Sensory Systems and Perceptions Flashcards
Name the 5 parts of the Sensory System from least complex to most.
1) Receptors
2) Thalamus
3) Primary Sensory Cortex
4) Secondary Sensory Cortex
5) Association Cortex
What are the 3 main features of the Sensory system organization?
1) Hierarchal organization - low to high complexity with most inputs from lower levels.
2) Functional Segregation - each of the PSC, SSC and AC contain different areas that specialize in different processes.
3) Parallel Processing - information flows through the levels parallel too.
The Thalamus plays a role in all sensory systems except which one?
The Olfactory system.
What are the receptors for the visual system?
Photoreceptors
What are the receptors for the somatosensory system?
Thermoreceptors
What are the receptors for the gustatory system?
Mechanoreceptors
What are the receptors for the olfactory system?
Chemoreceptors
What are the receptors for the auditory system?
Mechanoreceptors
What’s the associated sensory cortex for the visual system?
Visual cortex
What’s the associated sensory cortex for the somatosensory system?
Somatosensory cortex
What’s the associated sensory cortex for the gustatory system?
Gustatory cortex
What’s the associated sensory cortex for the olfactory system?
Olfactory cortex
What’s the associated sensory cortex for the auditory system?
auditory cortex
What’s the role of the Association cortex?
Receives input from more than 1 sensory cortex.
Sensorimotor association cortex paths are:
1) Posterior Parietal Association Cortex - visual, auditory and somatosensory cortex info.
2) Dorsolateral Prefrontal Association Cortex - receives PPAC input and sends it to secondary motor cortex areas
