Chapter 9 Section 2 Rates Of Weathering Flashcards
What are the effects of climate on weathering?
Cold, dry climates have less weathering, and warm wet climates have more weathering.
What is differential weathering?
The process by which softer less weather resistant rock wears away and leave harder more water resistant rock behind.
What is the effect of temperature on weathering?
Many chemical reactions happen more rapidly at higher temperatures. Also, climate regions that experience many freezes and thaws have a greater rate of mechanical weathering.
What is the effect of moisture on the rate of weathering?
Rate of chemical reactions increase when water is present.
How does elevation affect weathering?
Rocks at high elevation are exposed to high winds and temperature extremes and more precipitation. This results in more weathering at high elevations.
What is the effect of slope on weathering?
Steep sides of mountains increase the speed of water running which increases weathering.
How do biological factors affect weathering?
More organisms and acids in the soil and burrowing animals and plant roots speed weathering.
Name two ways in which water may increase the rate of weathering?
The rate of chemical reactions may increase with water present. Also, steep slopes cause water to run down faster and increased weathering.
