Chapter 9 S Flashcards
What happens during interphase in meiosis
Synthesis of organelles and DNA
Cell synthesises proteins and increase in size
What happens during prophase 1 in meiosis
Chromosomes condense and attach to nuclear enevelope
Homologous chromosomes lines up
Nuclear envelope breaks down
What happens during metaphase 1 in meiosis
Chromosomes line up on the equator in homologous pairs
Chromosomes cross over when matching regions break and reconnect to other chromosome
What happens during anaphase 1 In meiosis
Chromosomes move to opposite poles
Homologous pairs move to opposite pairs but chromatids remain together
What happens in telophase 1 in meiosis
Cytokinesis happens
2 daughter cells are made with half the chromosomes of original cell
Meiosis 2 happens but no replication of genetic material
What happens in prophase 2 in meiosis
Nuclear membrane and nuclei break up
Chromosomes don’t replicate
Chromosomes go to equator
What happens in metaphase 2 in meiosis
Chromosomes line up at the centre
What happens in anaphase 2 in meiosis
Sister chromatids spear ate and move towards oppsisute cell poles
What happens during telophase 2 in meiosis
Nuclei for at opposite poles
4 daughter cells, each with half the chromosomes as the original cell
What’s the founder effect
Occurs when a few individuals from a population colonise a new region
The small number of alleles contained within this population may not be representative of the whole population
The new population is less likely to adapt to changes
